Energy Efficient Communities Grant Opens to Community Groups

In early April, the Federal Government announced the launch of the first stream of its Energy Efficient Communities Program allowing incorporated not-for-profits, country fire authorities and rural fire services to access the grants program.

The program will deliver $40 million in grants to initially help community groups lower their energy bills and emissions, with businesses provided access to the program from mid-2020 as part of the second stream.

The program supports investment into energy-saving equipment upgrades, energy and emissions monitoring systems and energy audits. Community organisations that are eligible for the first stream can also invest in energy generation and storage projects like solar PV panels or battery systems.

How does the Energy Efficient Communities program work?

Eligible community organisations can apply for grants from $1,000 to $12,500 with a maximum of two projects to be funded per electorate. Only the first two eligible projects will receive funding based on the time and date they were received. The maximum project period is 12 months.

What can the grant be used for?

The Government has outlined that the grants can be used for one or more of the following:

  • Design, supply and installation of new solar photovoltaic generator systems.
  • Purchase and installation of new battery systems and battery storage systems.
  • Purchase and installation of new solar hot water heaters or air source hot water heat pumps, to replace existing equipment.
  • Purchase and installation of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting equipment or energy efficient lighting controls to replace existing equipment.
  • Design, supply and installation of high efficiency split system air conditioning units to replace existing equipment energy audits.
  • Energy audits.
